Jamaica bracing for Hurricane Melissa

Jamaica is bracing for the impact of Hurricane Melissa, which is expected to bring destructive winds and catastrophic flooding to the island in the coming hours.

The storm was upgraded to a Category 5 hurricane — the highest possible level — early on Monday, according to the U.S.-based National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The Jamaican government has ordered evacuations for parts of the capital, Kingston, and the entire island has been classed as “threatened”.
