A new electric street-washing machine introduced in Mdina is expected to cut road-cleaning times by around 60%, improving cleanliness in the historic city, which welcomes about 2.5 million visitors each year.
The compact machine, designed for narrow and uneven streets, combines sweeping and washing functions and can operate for six to eight hours on a single charge. With a 210-litre water tank, it can also clean beneath pavements and hard-to-reach areas.

Local Government Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli said the investment reflects the government’s commitment to providing local councils with modern tools to deliver cleaner and more sustainable public spaces. The machine is quieter and emission-free, making it particularly suited to Mdina, known as the “Silent City.”
