Malta has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regional cooperation to protect the Mediterranean Sea and its marine environment, as it marks the 50th anniversary of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC).
Established in 1976 and based in Malta, REMPEC plays a key role in preventing, preparing for and responding to marine pollution incidents across the Mediterranean.
Energy, Environment and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Minister Miriam Dalli said Malta’s role as host of REMPEC carries a particular responsibility to promote cooperation among Mediterranean countries and ensure the protection of the shared marine environment.
Sustainable Mobility Minister Chris Bonett said the past 50 years have demonstrated the importance of regional cooperation, noting that marine pollution and other maritime risks do not stop at national borders.

He stressed the need for greater prevention, training, information-sharing and coordinated response systems, particularly as the maritime sector faces new fuels, technologies, larger vessels and increasingly complex risks.
Malta, he said, will continue working to strengthen regional cooperation and promote cleaner shipping and ports across the Mediterranean.
