Malta will be playing once again in League D of the UEFA Nations League after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Luxembourg in the second leg of the League C/D Play-Off at the Stade de Luxembourg on Tuesday.
Luxembourg retain their League C status with a 5-0 aggregate score while Malta will be facing Andorra and Gibraltar in League D.
Thill put Luxembourg in front midway through the first half and the hosts missed the chance to double their lead when Bonello saved a penalty in first half added time. Relief for Malta was short lived as Sinani fired home from close range to leave Malta trailing 4-0 on aggregate.
Malta were reduced to ten men just after the hour when Joseph Mbong was sent off after getting a second yellow card.
It got worse for Malta when Luxemboug added a third on 70 minutes to put the game out of sight. Malta’s hopes of promotion to Group C of the Nations League were probably extinguished with the 2-0 defeat at Ta’Qali so now they remain where they are. In Group D their opponents will be Andorra and Gibralter.
