The U.N. Security Council will meet Monday to discuss the legality of the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, following a U.S. Special Forces operation carried out over the weekend.
Maduro has been taken to New York and is being held in U.S. custody ahead of a court appearance on drug-related charges scheduled for Monday.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres warned the operation sets a “dangerous precedent,” according to his spokesperson. Legal experts have also questioned the legality of the action, though the United States is expected to block any Security Council effort to hold it accountable.
