The Cardiology Department at Mater Dei Hospital recognised as a Specialist Quality of Care Centre

Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela

The Heart Failure Clinic and Cardiology Department at Mater Dei Hospital have been honoured with ICARE-HF accreditation, recognising them as a HFA Heart Failure Care Quality Specialist Centre.

The Heart Failure Clinic at Mater Dei Hospital has been established since 2008 with the main objective of providing patient education and ensuring the use of therapy and direct medical assistance from the guidelines through close clinical monitoring. This clinic also plays a vital role in reducing patient hospital admissions by identifying early signs of decompensation and enabling prompt intervention.

Minister Jo Etienne Abela said that the Heart Failure team aims to further improve the care of patients with heart failure through the launch of a Diuretic Lounge designed to provide therapy to patients. He explained that today, the Heart Failure Clinic at Mater Dei Hospital manages the care of more than 4,000 patients each year, ranging from those with mild symptoms to those with advanced disease requiring complex interventions.

“This clinic aims to improve the patient’s quality of life by providing effective treatment in an outpatient environment. I congratulate and thank the Cardiology Department at Mater Dei Hospital which in recent years has continued to improve the care offered to Maltese and Gozitan patients”, concluded Dr Abela.
