Venezuelan opposition leader and pro-democracy campaigner Maria Corina Machado has won the Nobel Peace Prize.
The organising comittee praised her for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights… and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy”.
The committee said Ms Machado had stayed in Venezuela despite personal risk, calling it a “choice that has inspired millions of people”.
US President Donald Trump had on a number of occasions expressed his wish to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and appeared put out that he did not get the nomination.
A White House statement said, “The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”
