Investment in a sports facility that will also serve the school and the community, along with funds for innovation in modern technology for sports performance analysis
The renovation of the San Ġwann football pitch was inaugurated following an investment of around €200,000, which led to substantial improvements in this sports facility which is used both by students of the adjacent primary school, as well as by the community.
At the same time, investment in sport at San Ġwann is also being strengthened through innovation, with the club benefiting from funds that have enabled it to invest in modern equipment related to match analysis. This technology will help to strengthen performance analysis and continue to improve technical work with teams and players.
The stadium was inaugurated by the Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri and the Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima. The project was carried out by the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools (FTS), in collaboration with the Ministry for Justice, Research and Innovation and the San Ġwann Local Council.
The stadium, which covers approximately 4,500 square meters, has been given a renewed look and functionality through the installation of new synthetic turf and the replacement of the perimeter fence. This investment is improving the quality of an important sports space, particularly for all the children and young people who make use of it.
Minister Camilleri said that investment in sports facilities in schools is part of the work to ensure that education gives students more opportunities to develop fully.
“Education does not only take place in the classroom. Sport plays an important role in the full development of our children and youth, because it not only helps them to be active, but also fosters in them values such as discipline, teamwork and perseverance. Therefore, we must continue to invest in quality sports spaces that give students more opportunities to develop their skills and potential. With this investment, we are improving a facility that will be used by students and at the same time continue to serve the community, as part of the complete educational experience that we want to offer our children,” said Minister Camilleri.
Minister Clifton Grima said that this project in San Ġwann is part of a broader vision of investment in modern infrastructure that supports an active and healthy lifestyle.
“When we invest in sport, we are not only investing in infrastructure, but also in people and the tools that help them develop their potential. The renovation of this stadium is providing a quality space for the community, while the investment through innovation funds is giving the club access to modern technology for match analysis . This is a concrete example of how innovation can be used in the sports sector to support technical development, improve performance analysis and help teams and players continue to progress,” said Minister Grima.
The Councillor responsible for Sports, within the San Ġwann Local Council, Trevor Fenech, stressed the importance that the facility has for the locality. “This stadium has been part of the sporting life of San Ġwann for years and is used by children, young people and people from our community. Today we are seeing it given a new lease of life, with much better conditions for all those who use it. This is an investment that will continue to be enjoyed by our community for years to come and which will help us continue to encourage more children and young people to get involved in sport,” said Fenech.
This project forms part of a wider FTS investment programme in sports facilities. During 2025, the Foundation invested around €1.34 million in sports facilities in various schools. Further interventions are planned in the coming months, including the installation of new synthetic turf at Fgura Primary School and at Dingli, Kirkop and Santa Luċija secondary schools. These projects are at the public procurement stage, while an investment is also planned in the construction of a new stadium at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School in Naxxar.
The investment in San Ġwann therefore combines improvements in sports infrastructure with investment in technology and innovation, with the aim of creating better conditions for both participation in sports and for the technical development and performance of athletes.
