European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposes “associate member of the EU” for Canada

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during her annual State of the European Union address: “I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada being the first associate member of the EU.”

With Canada and the United States at loggerheads over trade and tarrifs, Mr Carney has said on a number of occasions that he would like closer ties with the EU as Canada looks to reduce its reliance on US trade.
