Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Supply Anton Refalo addressing Olive Oil Congress in Lisbon

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Supply Anton Refalo addressed the opening ceremony of the Olive Oil World Congress in Lisbon, Portugal. The congress brought together ministers, researchers, scientists, producers, industry representatives and policymakers from around the world to discuss the future of the olive oil sector.

Key topics addressed during the congress included the use of technology and artificial intelligence in agriculture, adaptation to climate change, biodiversity conservation, the quality and authenticity of olive oil, its health benefits, as well as its marketing and promotion in international markets. The program also included sessions on smart farming, olive genetics, modern production processes and sustainable practices for the future of the sector.

In his address, Minister Refalo highlighted Malta’s heritage in olive cultivation and said that our country is experiencing a renewal in the sector through investment in quality, sustainability and innovation.

He argued that challenges such as climate change and water scarcity require more investment in research and resilient agricultural practices, while emphasizing the importance of international collaboration to share knowledge and best practices.

The minister also reiterated the Maltese Government’s commitment to continue supporting the agricultural sector through policies that enhance the quality, authenticity and sustainability of production.

“Olive oil is more than an agricultural product. It is a symbol of Mediterranean identity and lifestyle, and we must continue to work together to ensure a strong and sustainable future for this sector”, concluded Minister Refalo.
