Alex Borg has unveiled plans for an underground mass rapid transport system aimed at addressing Malta’s long-term traffic challenges, with the first proposed line estimated to cost €1.4 billion.

The 11.5km line would run through Malta’s busiest urban corridor, linking the airport with St Venera, Ħal Qormi, the University area, Gżira, Sliema, St Julian’s and Pembroke.

The proposed system is expected to carry up to 36 million passengers annually, with trains operating at a frequency of eight trips per hour.

Former PN leader Adrian Delia said around 30% of the financing is expected to come from EU funds, while additional funding structures are still being discussed.

According to the proposal, excavation of the first tunnel could be completed within approximately 15 months. Borg described the project as a long-term solution to Malta’s growing traffic congestion.
