Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri, officially inaugurated the completion of the De La Rue factory expansion project in Malta, a significant investment that continues to strengthen our country’s position as a centre of excellence in advanced manufacturing and security printing.
This project, which began in 2022, represents an investment of almost €60 million and will lead to more quality careers, modern technology and specialized training for Maltese and Gozitan workers. The expansion includes investment in advanced vision systems and more productive processes.

In his speech, the Prime Minister said that De La Rue is a strategic partner in Malta’s economic progress. He stressed that the fact that such an investment remains in our country is not something guaranteed, but the result of a climate of trust, stability and economic policies that support businesses and families.
Dr Abela noted that, despite important changes in the De La Rue group on an international level, Malta remained central to the future plans of this company.
He said that this confirms the skills of our workers and the competitiveness that our country has achieved. Dr Abela added that this company “believed and most clearly still believes in the potential of Maltese and Gozitan workers. It invested in their training and provided quality work opportunities to hundreds of families.”
The Prime Minister also referred to investments “which confirm the positive momentum our country has. We have seen the expansion of STMicroelectronics and the announcement of the investment by Vantive – in the medical and pharmaceutical sector. These are clear examples of how Malta is continuing to diversify its economy and attract investment in high value-added sectors,” reiterated Dr Abela.
He thanked the management and employees of De La Rue, as well as Malta Enterprise and INDIS Malta, for their work in making this project a reality.
Minister Silvio Schembri said that this investment by De La Rue is a direct result of the strong and stable economy that we have built together over the years, an economy that continues to offer positive prospects and new opportunities.
“It is precisely this environment of stability and certainty that gives international companies of this level the confidence to continue to invest, expand their operations and create more added value and quality jobs in Malta. This investment will in fact continue to create quality jobs, strengthen our country’s competitiveness and contribute to sustainable economic growth,” said Minister Schembri.
