The Parish of Our Lady of Grace will benefit from substantial funding to carry out necessary restoration work on the church’s dome and the Notre Dame theatre, better known as the Parish Hall, used by thousands of Żabbar residents.

This was announced by the Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment, Byron Camilleri and the Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, together with the Archpriest of Our Lady of Grace Parish.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace is one of the most significant religious sites in Malta, with great historical and cultural importance, attracting thousands of people every year. Over time, the building has suffered various damages, particularly to the dome and ceilings, which are also affecting the artistic value contained within.

Minister Byron Camilleri emphasised the direct impact of this project on the community, stressing that the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace is much more than a building, but an integral part of the identity and faith of the Żabbarija community and of the thousands of pilgrims who visit it every year. He said that this project will ensure that this place continues to offer a dignified and safe environment, while continuing to serve as a meeting and unity point for the community.

Minister Owen Bonnici stated that this investment forms part of the Government’s broader work to continue to protect and preserve our national heritage. This not only strengthens our cultural identity, but also ensures that future generations can enjoy and appreciate this unique heritage. A clear commitment that shows how much culture and history are a priority for our country. “This investment confirms the Government’s clear vision to continue to prioritize the country’s cultural and religious identity, not only as a heritage that must be protected, but as a living part of our communities, which continues to enhance the quality of people’s lives and leave a lasting impact for generations to come,” stated Dr Bonnici.

The Parish Archpriest welcomed this investment with satisfaction and thanked the authorities for their continued support towards the protection and enhancement of this important heritage.
