The Government is continuing to strengthen its commitment towards a more sustainable environment through the Palm Distribution Scheme, an initiative that aims to support Local Councils in their work of beautifying towns and villages across Malta and Gozo.
Through this scheme, which is being managed by the Directorate responsible for Rural Agricultural Services within the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, a number of locally grown palm trees are being distributed to be planted in various public spaces such as roads, squares and gardens. The main aim of this initiative is to continue to improve the quality of the urban environment while strengthening the presence of green spaces in our communities.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo reiterated, “This initiative also has another important dimension, as over the past few years several localities in our country have been affected by the palm borer problem, an infestation that has caused the loss of palm trees in many public spaces. Through this scheme, the Government is making a concrete contribution so that this loss can gradually be replaced and the natural landscape of our localities continues to be strengthened.”
Minister Refalo added that all palms distributed under this scheme are being grown locally, a fact that further strengthens the Government’s policy of supporting local agricultural production while promoting sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the agricultural sector.
“In this phase of the scheme, a number of Local Councils in Malta and Gozo are benefiting from this initiative, through which efforts to beautify and improve the environment in communities across the country will continue to be strengthened,” concluded Minister Refalo.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli stressed the importance of collaboration between Government and Local Councils to ensure that such environmental initiatives reach communities directly. She stated that Local Councils play a crucial role in beautifying localities and protecting the environment, and that schemes such as this are helping them to continue to carry out this mission with more resources and support.
This initiative is part of a broader vision that brings together environmental protection, support for the agricultural sector and the strengthening of local communities. Through initiatives such as these, the Government is concretely demonstrating how collaboration between Ministries and Local Councils can lead to positive results that improve the quality of life of citizens, while leaving a more beautiful and sustainable environment for future generations.
