“Social justice is not a political choice or a convenient slogan, but a moral and institutional obligation that should guide every public decision. The true measure of a modern State is not found only in economic progress or administrative stability, but in the way it protects human dignity and protects those who are in situations of vulnerability.” This was reiterated by Speaker Anġlu Farrugia when earlier today he addressed the conference on social justice held in the Plenary of the House of Representatives.
The Speaker emphasised that social justice requires a mature and responsible vision, where every policy or reform is also evaluated in light of its impact on the concrete human being — on families, on workers, on physical and mental health, and on the quality of life of present and future generations.
The Speaker called for unity and institutional maturity, while reiterating that this is not a partisan issue but one of national interest. He stressed that Parliament must remain a space of respect and serious reflection, where words lead to action and where social justice no longer remains an abstract principle but becomes a concrete reality.
“Justice begins with words, but is carried out with action, and if we want to be truly just, we must continue to ask ourselves not only what we have done but what we still have to do,” concluded Speaker Farrugia.
The conference was also addressed by Alex Borg, Leader of the Opposition, Michael Falzon, Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, Julia Farrugia, Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering, and Justin Schembri, Opposition Spokesperson for Education.
After the conference, Ivan Bartolo together with Charles Azzopardi and Justin Schmbri presented a Private Members Bill to the Speaker.
