During the Carnival period, 50 activities will be held in various localities around Malta and Gozo, as the Directorate for Local Government is once again financially supporting Local Councils to hold seasonal activities in their localities.
This was announced by the Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government, Owen Bonnici and the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, who explained that €250,000 has been allocated for this scheme.
It was stated that Carnival is one of the oldest cultural events in the country, where various streets and squares are filled with spectacular joy that delights families gathered in localities around Malta and Gozo, including tourists who even visit our country specifically for this purpose.
Minister Owen Bonnici clearly emphasised how this is one of the most beautiful traditions that continues to strengthen the sense of community in our country. “During Carnival, around 50 activities will be taking place in various localities around Malta and Gozo, offering varied entertainment for everyone. This is being done thanks to the ongoing commitment of the Directorate for Local Government, which is once again financially supporting Local Councils so that they can organise quality seasonal activities. An initiative that not only raises the spirits of the festival, but also continues to support culture, participation and unity in our communities,” concluded Minister Bonnici.

Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli said that in order for Councils to be in a better position to preserve and strengthen this tradition in their respective localities, the Directorate for Local Government has re-launched this scheme for Carnival 2026. She explained how this also aligns with the Malta 2050 Vision.
“Every few weeks we are issuing various schemes to promote the culture of our country. In this way, the Government is helping Local Councils to stage seasonal activities in their respective localities. After the success of the Christmas activities, now it is the turn of the Carnival activities. In this way, we will be ensuring that every citizen can enjoy Carnival in their respective locality or nearby. Although the main activities will continue to be celebrated in Valletta and Floriana, we are providing the opportunity for more participation in these activities, to be enjoyed throughout Malta. and all of Gozo,” concluded Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.
Meanwhile, the Local Councils that benefited from this scheme are, Attard, Mosta, Naxxar, San Gwann, St Paul’s Bay, Mtarfa, Birkirkara, Għargħur, St Julian’s, Birgu, Senglea, Cospicua, Żabbar, Fgura, Floriana, Kalkara, Paola, Tarxien, Qormi, Żejtun, Birżebbuġa, Gudja, Għaxaq, Ħamrun, Luqa, Marsa, Marsaxlokk, Santa Lucia, Santa Venera, Siġġiewi, Dingli, Kirkop, Mqabba, Qrendi, Rabat Malta, Safi, Żurrieq, Rabat Gozo, Fontana, Għajnsielem, Għarb, Għasri, Munxar, Nadur, Qala, San Lawrenz, Ta’ Sannat, Xagħra, Xewkija and Żebbuġ.
