National parks: community meetings continue

Consultation with senior citizens on White Rocks

A number of senior citizens attended a public consultation on the national parks that are planned for our country, with special focus on White Rocks.

This meeting, led by Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli and the Project Green team, is one of a series of meetings being organised under the theme Shape Your Space as part of the public consultation on the creation of national parks at White Rocks, Fort Campbell and Manoel Island.

“We want to listen to everyone’s ideas. Today we met with senior citizens who shared many interesting ideas with us. They also shared memories going back to when these areas were used as British barracks. I encourage everyone to be part of this process so that these parks are truly for the people,” said Minister Miriam Dalli.

During the meeting, participants had the opportunity to share their ideas, ranging from stories from the past to suggestions on how they would like to see this transformation take place. Several senior citizens spoke about the importance of these spaces as community areas where families can meet and spend time together. Among the proposals mentioned was the idea of making the area accessible by sea transport. The need for the site to be accessible to everyone was also highlighted, as well as the provision of public facilities and a designated dog area.

In recent weeks, Project Green has launched a consultation process through which young people, architecture students, and local councils have had the opportunity to share their views and suggestions on these environmental projects.

“As an agency leading this consultation, we strongly believe that everyone should have a say, from the youngest to the oldest. We want projects like these to truly be by the people and for the people,” remarked Project Green COO Beverley Costa.
