New treatment launched for prostate cancer patients
Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela announced that with the participation of the Radiology Department at Mater Dei Hospital and the Oncology Department at Sir Anthony Mamo Hospital, a new Rectal Spacers treatment is being launched for patients with prostate cancer.
It was explained that due to the fact that the prostate and the bowel are located close to each other, this new treatment will ensure that the rays given for prostate cancer do not harm the bowel. Therefore, this treatment, which will be given in the form of a gel , will protect the bowel during radiation therapy for prostate cancer.
“Around 50 people a year will be benefiting from this new treatment, where the intestine will be more protected as a result of less inflammation and thus will improve the quality of life of these patients. While I thank the specialists involved, we are committed to continuing to introduce and offer services and treatments that benefit patients and improve the health service offered in our country,” concluded Dr Abela.
