The Department of Public Works continues to carry out various projects in the San Blas Therapeutic Community, with investments that are improving facilities and strengthening the security of the environment where essential services are provided. Among these interventions, it is currently in the final stages of the reconstruction of the Community wall, a project that began after an urgent intervention to eliminate a security risk.
This project is part of a wider effort that the Department of Public Works is carrying out in a number of communities, entities and non-governmental organisations across Malta and Gozo. Through these investments, the Department continues to offer technical assistance and its work to improve facilities that provide essential services to the community, while effectively addressing infrastructural interventions that enhance safety, accessibility and the quality of the environment where these services are provided.
This was announced during a site visit by the Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli, accompanied by the Director General of the Department of Public Works, Architect Stephen Bonello, and the Director of Caritas Malta, Anthony Gatt. During the visit, the Minister was given an update on the progress of the works, which are at an advanced stage and are being carried out in accordance with the approved plan and technical specifications.
Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli said that this intervention demonstrates the Government’s commitment to, through the Department of Public Works, continue to respond in a concrete way to the needs of communities and organisations that play an important role in society. “When we invest in the infrastructure of entities such as Caritas, we are investing directly in people. Our priority remains to address situations that create security risks, while offering the necessary support so that these organisations can continue to provide their invaluable service to the community,” said Minister Zerafa Civelli.
The Director General of the Department of Public Works, Architect Stephen Bonello, explained that the works are being carried out according to the highest technical standards, with an emphasis on structural health and safety, while respecting the existing characteristics of the site.
For his part, the Director of Caritas Malta, Anthony Gatt, thanked the Ministry for Local Government and Public Works and the Department of Public Works for their response and collaboration, and stated that this intervention will continue to strengthen the safety of the people who make use of the San Blas Therapeutic Community every day.
The intervention was carried out after Caritas Malta requested the assistance of the Department of Public Works due to the deterioration of part of the wall at the San Blas Therapeutic Community. Following the technical survey carried out on site, the Department began the intervention by removing in a controlled manner the sections of the wall that were structurally weak, while maintaining those parts that were still in good condition.
The reconstruction of the wall is being carried out with limestone, in a way that maintains the existing character of the site, while also incorporating drainage systems to reduce water pressure behind the wall and enhance its long-term stability. The works are now in their final stages and, once the construction of the wall is complete, the final finishing works, site cleaning and a final inspection will be carried out to certify that the intervention was carried out according to the highest standards of quality and safety.
