Prime Minister Robert Abela has reiterated the Government’s commitment to investing in education, describing it as a key driver of social mobility and a means of creating greater opportunities for everyone.
Dr Abela was speaking during a pre-Budget 2027 consultation meeting with the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) at the Auberge de Castille.
He stressed that education should enable individuals to reach their full potential, regardless of their social or economic background, and highlighted the importance of having motivated, trained and valued educators.
The Prime Minister also referred to Vision Malta 2050, which places education among the main pillars of economic growth, social progress and individual development.
During the meeting, Dr Abela welcomed the positive start to the current scholastic year and acknowledged the work required to provide increasingly extensive educational services.
He also highlighted a Government measure introduced this scholastic year to provide greater assistance to vulnerable students and families. The annual allocation available to school heads to address students’ basic needs has been increased from €10,000 to €30,000.
The funding can be used to help families facing financial difficulties with school uniforms, clothing, meals, books and educational materials, as well as participation in educational outings and activities.
Dr Abela said such initiatives were essential to ensure that no child is left behind, adding that investment in education must remain focused on improving students’ experiences and expanding opportunities.
He concluded by reaffirming the Government’s commitment to continued investment in education and consultation with educators and their representatives.
Ministers Julia Farrugia, Byron Camilleri, Clifton Grima and Rosianne Cutajar, together with MPs Romilda Zarb, Fleur Abela and Mariah Meli, also attended the meeting.
