The Ministry for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour marked the successful conclusion of the Scouts and Guides for the Goals initiative and the closing of this year’s Saving Our Blue summer campaign, highlighting the importance of empowering communities, including youths, to take action towards a more sustainable future.
The Scouts and Guides for the Goals initiative brought together Scout Groups and Girl Guide Units from across Malta and Gozo, who presented projects developed over six months on their assigned Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through community-based activities, learning experiences and an SDG-themed scavenger hunt, participants explored how global goals can be translated into meaningful local action.
The day also marked the closing of the eighth edition of the Saving Our Blue campaign at Pretty Bay, Birżebbuġa. Throughout the year, the campaign continued to raise awareness about marine litter, single-use plastics and the protection of Malta’s marine environment through school visits, educational activities and public events.
The closing event brought together various entities and organisations falling under the remit of the Ministry for Energy and Environment, offering information and practical guidance on sustainable lifestyles, marine conservation, biodiversity, and responsible resource use. The event also featured a beach soccer tournament organised in collaboration with the Malta Football Association and local football clubs, combining sport and community engagement with environmental awareness.
Minister Miriam Dalli remarked that both initiatives demonstrate the important role that education, community engagement and individual responsibility play in advancing sustainable development and environmental protection. Minister Dalli noted that by empowering youths and fostering greater public awareness, such initiatives help translate sustainability principles into meaningful action within communities.
