A person has died following a rockfall off the coast of Comino on Saturday evening, while two others were rescued and treated for injuries.
The Rescue Coordination Centre launched an emergency response after receiving reports that several people required immediate assistance. An Armed Forces of Malta rescue vessel evacuated a woman needing medical care to Mġarr Harbour, where she was handed over to Gozo General Hospital personnel. A second person with minor injuries was brought ashore by a private vessel for treatment.
A search operation involving Civil Protection Department rescuers and Armed Forces of Malta divers from Gozo Command and the 3rd Regiment located a third person trapped underwater. The casualty showed no signs of life.
The rescue operation remains ongoing, while a magisterial inquiry has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
