Andy Burnham wins by-election to increase speculation of Labour leadership challenge

Andy Burnham

Andy Burnham has won a by-election in Makerfield which will see the former Labour Mayor of Manchester return to Westminster and probably mount a leadership challenge.

Burnham won by more than 9,000 votes and in his acceptance speech, said the result in Makerfield ” could be the turning point” for Labour.

The big question now is whether Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will stand down and give Burnham the keys to Number 10, or will Labour face a leadership election?
