Dr Lydia Abela, wife of the Prime Minister, accompanied by Principal Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana and Permanent Secretary Matthew Vella and SportMalta CEO Mark Cutajar, visited the 2026 Sports Activity taking place at the MFCC Ta’ Qali.

The Prime Minister’s wife, Dr Lydia Abela, not only watched the students participate in sporting activities, but also had the opportunity to speak to them about the importance of sport in our daily lives. She also practiced a number of sports with the students.

She stressed that sport goes far beyond physical activity, “sport is a tool that helps us to be more disciplined, build confidence and believe in ourselves more and more”.

Dr Abela added that such initiatives help students grow as individuals, create positive relationships with others and develop important life skills. She stressed that when we give children and youth more opportunities to participate in sport, we are investing in a stronger, more confident and more united generation.

For his part, Head of the Public Service Tony Sultana mentioned how Attività Sportiva 2026 is bringing together students from schools across Malta and Gozo in an energetic, engaging and inclusive environment. An event that above all is promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.

He said that around 5,000 students from middle and secondary schools spread across Malta and Gozo are having the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities, including basketball, gymnastics, table tennis, OCR and obstacle race courses. This is in addition to other interactive and digital experiences that are designed to make sport more accessible, fun and participatory for everyone.

This sporting event, which is being held under the auspices of the Office of the Principal Permanent Secretary, in collaboration with SportMalta and the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, will be coming to an end on Friday 22nd May.
