As the prospect of an armed invasion of Ukraine by Russia remains at a very high level, President Putin has accused the United States of trying to push Russia into a war.
Russia has positioned around 100,000 troops along the Ukraine border. A move which prompted real fears of an invasion. Putin fears that Ukraine might join NATO, which could place Western forces along the border with Russia. He suggested that if Ukraine were granted its wish to join NATO, it could drag the other members into a war with Russia.
Western countries and the United States are prepared to impose severe sanctions on Russia should its troops cross the border into Ukraine.
America says it is still open to finding a diplomatic solution and Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson has travelled to Ukraine in a bid to find a peaceful solution. He is expected to also have talks with Vladimir Putin.
