The Italian Interior Ministry announced that the measure involves “targeted and selective” checks on non-EU nationals entering Italy from Spain. The move does not suspend the Schengen Agreement but temporarily reinstates internal border controls, which are permitted under EU rules in exceptional circumstances.
EU citizens travelling between Italy and Spain are not affected by the measure, although they may still be subject to routine identity checks.
The decision was announced on Thursday by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, alongside Deputy Prime Ministers Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini. The government said the temporary controls were introduced in response to concerns that migrants arriving in Ceuta could continue their journey through the Schengen Area.
The move follows the arrival of thousands of migrants in Ceuta, Spain’s autonomous enclave on the North African coast, prompting renewed debate across Europe over border security and migration management.
