Dr Omar Caruana has been appointed as the European Prosecutor for Malta within the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). This comes as the Council of the European Union has just appointed the European Prosecutor representing Malta to form part of the EPPO. The European Prosecutor representing France has also been appointed.
Dr Omar Caruana was appointed following a public call at national level and a selection process at European level. Dr Caruana will now be based in Luxembourg in his role as European Prosecutor for the Republic of Malta.
This Office is responsible for investigating, prosecuting and bringing to justice those who are perpetrators or accomplices of crimes against the financial interests of the European Union. It is also responsible for crimes of fraud, misappropriation, corruption, and cross-border VAT fraud of more than €10 million. This is an ambitious project that Malta was among the first member states to join in 2018. So far, 24 member states are participating in the EPPO.
The EPPO shall perform the function of prosecutor in the competent Courts of the participating Member States in relation to these offences. The European Prosecutors will be supervising the investigations and prosecutions of these offences affecting the European budget in a college, together with the European Chief Prosecutor, Laura Codruța Kövesi.
The Government congratulates Dr Omar Caruana for this prestigious role.
