Through the Cultural Region 2026, the Port Region in collaboration with the Senglea Local Council, the Fgura Scouts and the Directorate for Human Rights will organise the cultural activity called ‘Ħġejjeġ’ on 27th June, between 7:30 and 11:00 pm, as a celebration of the historical, cultural and community heritage of the Senglea locality.
Through a contemporary interpretation of an ancient tradition linked to the haġġieġ, the activity will transform several historic areas of Senglea into a cultural route with eight different venues where musical performances by local artists will be held. Each location will be marked with a traditional haġġieġ, while an interactive map will guide the public from one site to another.
Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli said that this initiative is a clear example of how cultural heritage can be brought to life through collaborations between local councils, local entities and the community.
“This project not only preserves an important tradition linked to Senglea and the Port Region, but also creates an inclusive space where families, artists and visitors come together in a unique cultural experience. I encourage the public to attend and be part of this celebration of our identity and heritage,” concluded Minister Zerafa Civelli.
The activity will culminate at Fort St. Michael, where the final bonfire will be lit and a short documentary will be shown focusing on the history and significance of the Bonfire tradition in Senglea and the Port Region.
Senglea Mayor Clive Pulis explained that visitors will also be able to enjoy a free tourist train service that will continuously circulate between all the activity venues, while providing information about Senglea’s history and heritage. Workshops related to food, music and cultural stories will also be organised, for which pre-registration is required.
For his part, the Artistic Director, Joseph Galea, said that these events do not only have an artistic purpose, but go beyond that by placing culture at the heart of the community and close to the people, thus increasing accessibility to culture. He added that these initiatives also aim to strengthen awareness about the localities in which they are being organised.
The public is invited to attend and explore the full program of activities. Registration is required for all workshops. The interactive map can be accessed here: https://shorturl.at/63sVW
