New EU rules on migration become applicable today: Malta’s MEP’s reaction

New EU rules on migration become applicable today, following the adoption by the EU of the Pact on Migration and Asylum back in 2024.

The Pact on Migration and Asylum establishes a new framework for the management of migration and asylum in the EU, including rules on the screening of third-country nationals at the external borders, reception conditions, asylum procedures, responsibility and solidarity between member states, and crisis situations.

“The entry into force of the Pact is a significant step towards a more structured, predictable and fair EU migration system,” said MEP Alex Agius Saliba, Head of the Maltese delegation for the S&D group in the European Parliament. “For Malta, this offers greater clarity, strengthened solidarity mechanisms, and recognition of the realities faced by frontline Member States. However, its success depends on credible implementation, particularly on returns and a stronger external dimension, if we are to achieve a tangible and sustainable reduction in irregular migration.”

David Casa MEP

“The Pact on Migration and Asylum is the EU’s response to a long-standing security challenge and will provide Malta with the help we have been asking for for years,” said MEP David Casa, Head of the Maltese delegation for the EPP group in the European Parliament. “While it is not a miracle solution to a complex issue, it is an effective and fair way to improve Europe’s asylum system and make our borders more secure.”
