Minister Byron Camilleri on his first visit to Rabat Primary School

Education Minister Byron Camilleri visits Rabat Primary School

As his first official commitment in the field of education, the Minister for Education and Sport, Byron Camilleri, visited the Anton Agius Primary School in Rabat, where he closely followed the work being carried out in accordance with the principles of the National Strategy for Education 2024-2030, which places the well-being, emancipation and inclusion of the student at the centre of the education system.

The Anton Agius Primary School in Rabat, which opened three years ago following a substantial investment in modern educational infrastructure, is a clear example of the ongoing transformation in the education sector. The school, which previously operated from two separate buildings, now accommodates 422 students spread across 13 kindergarten classes and 18 primary classes. It is equipped with modern facilities that include art and music spaces, a gymnasium, a multi-sensory room and various digital resources that further enhance the learning experience.

During the visit, the Minister met with the Head of School, the management team, educators, students and all staff where he was able to understand the school’s priorities and the ongoing work towards inclusive and quality education. The school supports 48 students with different educational needs through 40 Learning Support Educators, while it is also working towards achieving Dyslexia Friendly School status.

The Minister was also informed about various achievements achieved by the school during this year. These include a Gold Award in Mathematics, a Gold Award in the Let’s Talk Farming programme, Gold and Platinum Awards in the Book Champion Programme, the Green Flag of the EkoSkola and the Digital Citizenship Award, which reflect the school’s commitment to academic excellence, sustainability and the responsible use of technology.

Among the projects being carried out are a Makerspace through funding from Esplora, the Open Horizon project for Early Years students, the Green Project which includes an outdoor classroom, experimentation station and kitchen garden, as well as the school’s participation in various eTwinning and Erasmus+ initiatives which continue to offer new learning and collaboration opportunities. These projects are contributing to a more dynamic and innovative educational experience, while encouraging more creativity, collaboration and active learning among students.

Minister Byron Camilleri said that this school is a clear example of how investment in facilities, inclusion and innovation is leading to better opportunities for students. “Education is undergoing a continuous transformation that is placing the student at the centre of every decision. It is gratifying to see schools that are being protagonists in this transformation through innovation, inclusion and the use of technology. The Government will continue to invest so that every student has the opportunity to develop their potential and is prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future,” the Minister said.

The Head of School, Dorita Maniscalco, explained how the school is committed to providing modern, inclusive and quality education, while continuing to invest in the professional development of educators, in student well-being and in innovative initiatives that enrich the educational experience.

She pointed out that over the last three years the school has continued to strengthen through various investments and projects, including a new play structure for early years students, a space dedicated to STEM subjects, as well as initiatives related to outdoor learning, sustainability and international collaboration through the Erasmus+ programme.

“Our school is a second home for our students. Therefore, we work every day to create an environment where every student feels safe, supported and motivated to reach their full potential. This visit continues to encourage us to build on the achievements we have already achieved and continue to offer the best possible educational experience for all our students,” concluded Ms. Maniscalco.
