Pretty Bay sewer update works completed as tarmac works begin

Energy and Environment Minister Miriam Dalli in Birzebbuga

Works to improve the drainage system near Pretty Bay have been completed in time for the increase in activity in the area during summer.

This was announced by Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli during a visit to the site alongside WSC CEO Karl Cilia, Birżebbuġa mayor Scott Camilleri, and other members of the local council.

“This project is an important investment in the quality, resilience and long-term sustainability of Birżebbuġa’s infrastructure. By upgrading both the sewer and potable water networks, while also reconstructing the road and pavements, we are ensuring that this area is better equipped to serve residents, businesses and visitors for many years to come,” said Minister Dalli.

€3.1 million project ready before summer

The €3.1 million investment has delivered significant infrastructure upgrades, including approximately 750 metres of trunk sewage main, 200 metres of household sewage mains, 750 metres of potable water trunk main, and new potable water house services throughout. These works addressed the specific engineering challenges of operating in seawater and sandy environments, where precise gradients and specialised techniques were essential to ensure a durable, long-term result.

The scope of works also included full road reconstruction using a concrete base and mesh reinforcement for added structural strength, as well as new pavements throughout. The completed project has renewed both the underground infrastructure and the surface above it and is built to serve the area for decades to come.

WSC CEO Karl Cilia thanked the residents, businesses, and visitors in the area for their patience and cooperation throughout the course of these works. “Completing this project ahead of summer has ensured that residents, businesses and visitors will benefit from improved infrastructure during the busy summer season. This project reflects the Water Services Corporation’s commitment to delivering modern, durable infrastructure that improves service reliability for the public,” stated Karl Cilia.

Birżebbuġa Mayor Scott Camilleri said that this project is an important step towards making Birżebbuġa’s drainage system more sustainable and better suited to future needs. He added that, as a local council, they also recognise the commitment and investment made to regenerate Pretty Bay Road, so that one of the locality’s most beautiful areas can once again be given the life and appearance it deserves.

In this area, infrastructure works by the Public Works Department are also being finalised.
