This initiative represents a €5.3 million investment, funded through the European Regional Development Fund, as part of the Government’s allocation of European funds.

Dr Abela described the project as part of the Government’s holistic vision to strengthen mental health services by working closely with organisations like the Richmond Foundation and civil society. He emphasized the growing recognition that mental health support should be rooted within communities and praised the Foundation’s efforts in reducing stigma.

He also highlighted ongoing government initiatives, including plans for a new mental health hospital at Mater Dei Hospital.

The Prime Minister noted that in just over a decade, the Richmond Foundation has increased its therapeutic sessions tenfold. He also referred to the Mental Health First Aid Course, which has been completed by over 11,000 people, including secondary school students.

Dr Abela stressed the importance of continued investment in mental health, stating that organisations like the Richmond Foundation play a key role in building a more empathetic and supportive society. He added that despite global challenges, social priorities remain central to Malta’s agenda.
