Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by the Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri, visited the Leone Philharmonic Society, the Aurora Opera Theatre, the La Stella Philharmonic Society and the Astra Opera Theatre in Victoria, Gozo. During these visits, the Prime Minister reiterated the importance of cultural organisations in the social and artistic life of the island of Gozo.
The visit to the Leone Philharmonic Society and the Aurora Opera House, are among the most important cultural spaces in Gozo and closely linked to the island’s musical and operatic tradition. The visit ended with a short meeting with members of the society, where the cultural contribution of the society and the importance of supporting voluntary cultural organisations in Gozo were discussed.
Prime Minister Abela also visited the Teatru Astra and the La Stella Philharmonic Society. During the visit, the Prime Minister toured the society’s building and the historic theatre, which is also one of the most important cultural spaces in Gozo. Dr Abela also saw the theatre’s stage and the production setup for the musical ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, which will be staged at the Teatru Astra between 14 and 22 March 2026.
Here the Prime Minister also met with the musical’s director, actors and crew members, who are working to stage high-level cultural productions in Gozo. The visit ended with a short meeting with club members, where the theatre’s cultural activities and the productions being staged were discussed.
The Government is committed to continuing to strengthen the cultural sector in Malta and Gozo, as indicated in the Malta 2050 Vision. A vision that recognises culture and the creative industries as important pillars for sustainable development, community identity and the economic growth of our country.
Prime Minister Abela emphasised that organisations such as the Philharmonic Societies play a crucial role in safeguarding Gozo’s cultural heritage while continuing to foster creativity and community participation. He stated that the Government remains committed to supporting the strengthening of culture and investing in spaces that allow arts and culture to continue to flourish in both Malta and Gozo.
