Works on the regeneration of the main piazza in Bugibba and its surroundings are advancing rapidly, with most underground structures and utility networks nearing completion, as surface finishing works gather pace.
During a visit to the Bugibba Regeneration Project site, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, and Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett commended the Malta Tourism Authority and Infrastructure Malta employees and contractors implementing this project, as they thanked the area’s residential and commercial communities for their cooperation during the ongoing works.
Project coordinator Jason Micallef, Infrastructure Malta Chief Executive Officer Steve Ellul and Malta Tourism Authority Chief Executive Officer Carlo Micallef, explained that since the project commenced earlier this year, workers have replaced most of the underground utility networks, including water, electricity and telecommunications, which are now being channelled into a new walk-through underground culvert, facilitating access for future maintenance and repairs. They are also building a large underground rainwater reservoir for the square’s new fountain and landscaped areas. The reconstruction of several streets leading to the square, and the adjacent promenade, as well as surface finishes, including paving and landscaping installations, are in progress as well.
Designed in collaboration with the area’s residents and businesses, the regenerated Buġibba square and its surroundings will feature safer footpaths, new landscaped areas, upgraded lighting, shaded seating areas and other street furniture.
Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg noted that this investment in the heart of Buġibba, which is part-funded by the eco contributions paid by tourists visiting Malta, is reviving this popular zone, which had not been upgraded in decades, and is now creating a more vibrant and sustainable open space for residents and visitors. “Our Budget 2026 decision to increase the daily eco contribution paid by tourists visiting the Maltese Islands will help us invest in many more similar projects for our communities, especially in tourism zones,” Dr Borg explained.
Minister Chris Bonett said that the project has been progressing well and remains on schedule for completion in May next year. “By summer, Maltese families and tourists will be able to enjoy this open space in a more modern, safe, and accessible environment,” he said. Adding that the extensive preparatory and underground works underway will ensure that the project can be enjoyed for many years to come. Minister Bonett also thanked the residents and business community for their support and understanding during the implementation of this project, which will further contribute to the regeneration of Buġibba.
During the visit, the two ministers were also accompanied by St Paul’s Bay Mayor Censu Galea, as well as other officials of Infrastructure Malta and the Malta Tourism Authority.
