Infrastructural works begin at the port of Ġnejna, Mġarr

The Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, announced the start of an infrastructural project at the Port of Ġnejna, which includes a winch room and a service pillar.

Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said expressed her satisfaction that this project has begun as it was one of the most requested by the local fishing community. “We have listened to the fishermen of the area who have requested this project to be carried out. Through this work, we will not only respond to their needs, but we are also giving a clear signal that our coastal communities are a priority for us.”

“Our fishermen form an essential part of our country’s maritime heritage and identity. As a Government we will remain determined to strengthen this sector through modern infrastructure, quality services and a clear vision for a sustainable future. We are committed to continuing to respond to the priorities of fisheries, because a strong fisheries sector also strengthens coastal communities and our economy in a resilient manner,” said Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said. She thanked the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture for their continued work, and the Mġarr local council for their cooperation.

Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture Services, Dennis Sciberras, explained, “Works will commence on a new winch room and service pillar here in Ġnejna. This project reflects the continued cooperation and support towards the fishing sector in Malta. For generations, our coastal communities, from Anchor Bay, Mġarr and Ġnejna, have depended on the sea for their livelihood and identity. There are a total of 519 fishermen holding MFA, MFB and MFC licences who will benefit from this winch room and service pillar.”

Works on the winch room and service pillar at Ġnejna began this week to continue improving this important fishing area. This step is expected to lead to a substantial improvement in the working conditions of fishermen, as well as in the facilities for small vessels using Ġnejna bay.
