The Ministry for the Environment, through Ambjent Malta, has secured the necessary permits to continue regenerating Wied Inċita into a family park, which is now set to be extended by a further 7,000 square metres.
Less than a year ago, parts of Wied Inċita amounting to 20,000 square metres were returned to the public following an agreement between the Environment Ministry and the company responsible for the landscaping of the arterial roads, which previously made use of the land. Now, a further 7,000 square metres of land will soon be made accessible to the public.
“Our valleys are valuable natural resources that deserve preservation and sustainable use. My Ministry has been dedicated to restoring this natural asset for public benefit. Phase 2 of our project at Wied Inċita will offer families and young people greater access to green spaces and will further enrich our natural environment,” said Minister Miriam Dalli.
The extension of Wied Inċita Park will introduce a larger green space to encourage leisure, relaxation, and active engagement with nature. The park extension will also involve the restoration of damaged rubble walls throughout the area to ensure public safety. To secure the site, Ambjent Malta will install timber fences along the perimeter.
Various trees and shrubs, including lavender, rosemary, hibiscus, oranges, lemons, figs, and pomegranates, will be planted. To support local biodiversity, additional species such as Myrtle and Laurustinus will attract and support a variety of insects and birds. Holm Oak and Aleppo Pine trees will provide nesting sites and shelter for birds and reptiles, while Carobs and Chaste Trees will offer food and habitat for various species.
A water feature, picnic benches, shade structures, and public convenience facilities will also be developed.
Herman Galea, Director General at Ambjent Malta, said “Every effort is being made to maintain the natural characteristics of the area, whilst ensuring the highest standards of safety for all visitors. The approach balances ecological sensitivity with the creation of a welcoming and accessible space, effectively offering a ‘green lung’ to the wider community.”
Wied Inċita is situated on the outskirts of Attard and borders Ħaż-Żebbuġ.
