The Malta Premier League and its member clubs congratulate Hamrun Spartans FC on becoming the first Maltese club to qualify for the league phase of a European competition.
“Hamrun’s participation in the UEFA Conference League is a game changer not only for this club but for Maltese football in general,” said MPL Chairman Joseph Muscat. Dr Muscat said that in addition to the sporting success, this result will strengthen the financial situation not only of Hamrun Spartans, but of all the clubs in the YoHealth Malta Premier.
With this result, Hamrun will receive an unprecedented sum from UEFA, but the coefficients of the Maltese clubs will also increase in such a way that the funds distributed to the other 11 clubs in the top division of Maltese football will also increase.
“When the MPL was formed, one of the stated goals was for at least one club to qualify for European competitions. Despite the scepticism, this goal has now been achieved. This will bring new challenges, including the scheduling of the Maltese Championship, but we are confident that this is just the beginning of a new phase for Maltese football where other clubs can achieve the same success,” concluded Dr Muscat.
