Trump-Putin meeting but no peace deal on Ukraine

The talked-up meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in Alaska has come and gone with little sign or indication of real progress on a peace deal for Ukraine.

Donald Trump welcomed Vladimir Putin warmly before both men left in Trump’s presidential car for their meeting.

Their meeting lasted just over three hours and in a hastily called press conference afterwards, both leaders read from a prepared statement. They did not take questions from reporters.

Putin gave nothing away while Trump said “there is no deal until there is a deal”.

The man at the centre of discussions, Ukraine’s President Zelensky, was not at the meeting. He has yet to make any public comment while European leaders are believed to be arranging telephone calls to discuss their reaction.
