Helpline 1779 launched for victims of revenge porn
Helpline 1779 has been launched, a dedicated helpline for people affected by sexual abuse through images, including the sharing or threat of sharing of intimate images without the person’s consent, also known as “revenge porn”.
The service aims to provide people experiencing this form of abuse with a confidential, non-judgemental and accessible point of contact, where they can receive emotional support, safety-focused guidance and information about the options available to them.
1779’s work focuses on the need for a person going through such a situation not to be left to navigate alone in a moment of fear, uncertainty or crisis.
These details were announced on Tuesday morning by Minister for Social Policy and the Family Michael Falzon, who emphasised the importance of strengthening support for people affected by this sexual abuse.
“Let us bear in mind the human impact that this abuse brings. These images only take a few seconds to be shared but their consequences stay with that person for the rest of their life. Therefore, I urge anyone affected to overcome fear, come forward and be given all the support they need,” stated Minister Michael Falzon.
During the same conference, the reasons that prevent people affected by this abuse from seeking help were discussed. These include, fear of being accused or judged, worries about whether they will be believed, or the fear that reporting could lead to the images being shared publicly.
The Chief Executive of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS), Alfred Grixti, spoke about the importance of social services continuing to respond to emerging forms of abuse and to the new challenges that individuals and families are facing.
Mr Grixti stated that callers receive a confidential and non-judgemental response, emotional support and safety-focused guidance, information on available options, help to identify practical steps that can be taken, as well as referral or guidance to other relevant services.
