Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said he was perplexed by the verdict in Yorgen Fenech’s trial over the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, based on the information available to him.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Muscat condemned attacks on the jurors and rejected claims made by former chief of staff Keith Schembri during the trial.
Muscat denied telling Schembri that murder intermediary Melvin Theuma had mentioned him in phone calls. He also said he had never been warned by security services of possible leaks involving Schembri, nor had Schembri asked to attend meetings with investigators.
Muscat praised the FBI’s role in the investigation, saying its resources and expertise were crucial in identifying the perpetrators.
