An investment of more than €560,000 through the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) in Fish Fest, a celebration of local production, but also an important initiative helping to raise awareness about the protection of our seas, encourage more sustainable fish consumption, provide concrete support to the fisheries sector, and promote more responsible choices among consumers.

Marsaxlokk Fish Festival celebrates fishermen and local produce
Minister Anton Refalo, together with Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti, announced the details of the Fish Festival, which will be held at Xatt is-Sajjieda, Marsaxlokk, on 20 September between 6:00pm and 11:00pm.
Festa Ħut celebrates the Maltese fishing sector, recognises the work of local fishermen and raises awareness about the quality and variety of local fish, through an educational, gastronomic and entertainment programme for the whole family.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Supply Anton Refalo said that Festa Ġqut is an important occasion to recognise the contribution of Maltese and Gozitan fishermen. “Our fishermen are an important part of our country’s maritime identity and play an essential role in the supply of fresh and local produce. Through Festa Ġqut we want to continue to value their work and encourage consumers to discover more of the variety and quality of local fish,” said Minister Refalo.
During the activity, a number of trophies will also be awarded in recognition of the work and dedication of local fishermen.
Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection Keith Azzopardi Tanti stressed the importance of European funds in supporting initiatives that strengthen the fisheries sector and bring local products closer to consumers.
“This investment not only celebrates local products, but also raises awareness about the protection of the seas, promotes sustainable fish consumption and supports the fisheries sector. As a Government, we are committed to continuing to attract European funds, invest them responsibly and ensure that every euro is translated into a concrete investment that is felt in people’s daily lives,” said Minister Azzopardi Tanti.
This year, particular attention will be paid to under-consumed fish species, including the Aċol, the Kubrit, the Tumbrell, the Sawrell and the Ħinturin. Professional chefs will demonstrate how lesser-known local fish can be prepared and cooked, with the public also given the opportunity to taste the product.
Fish Hawkers will sell fresh fish directly to the public, while there will be educational and informative stands, a Kids Area, fishing activities and boat tours from Xatt is-Sajjieda.
The Main Stage will offer entertainment from local artists, while the BBQ Area and various cultural stands will further add to the event experience.
Festa Ħut is being held with co-financing from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), as part of the work to strengthen the fisheries sector, promote local produce and encourage more varied and sustainable consumption of fish.
