Minister Julia Farrugia visits the project in Gżira which is being carried out with an investment of €250,000
Work on the first Day Centre project specifically for the elderly with disabilities is progressing well. In fact, 50% of the work on this building in Gżira is now complete.
This project is being carried out with a total investment of €250,000 and the centre is expected to open its doors to the elderly at the end of next October.
This was announced by the Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering Julia Farrugia during a visit to the property, in the presence of Permanent Secretary Stephanie Rocco and several officials from Aġenzija Sapport. She recalled that this centre will aim to offer the necessary support to meet the varied needs of elderly people with disabilities who are currently already attending day services run by Aġenzija Sapport.
Minister Farrugia revealed that once this day centre opens it will be providing specialised services to 35 senior citizens, in addition to providing food and transport. “This was a measure in Budget 2026 and so once again the Government will be keeping its promise to make this a specialised centre,” Minister Farrugia continued.
She said that through this centre, elderly people with disabilities will be able to benefit from programmes more suitable for them. “To this end, there was a need to evaluate the needs of elderly people with disabilities who already attend other centres and internal discussions have begun to create these programmes.”
Minister Julia Farrugia concluded by remarking that this building in Gżira was completely transformed with accessibility being the main consideration.
Sapport Agency CEO Oliver Scicluna referred to this work as a sign of the Agency’s commitment to continue developing specialized services. He said that through this project, the needs of elderly persons with disabilities will be better addressed with individualized programs that are adapted to them in an accessible environment and in modern facilities.
Although it is the first of its kind, this will be the 14th day centre in which Aġenzija Sapport offers its services. These include the centre in Gozo, as well as Spero – in collaboration with Outlook Coop – and Star – in collaboration with the Inspire Foundation.
