More than half of the new breakwater building and ferry passenger facilities have been completed in ‘ Bugibba

With a commitment to sustainable transport, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Funds, Equality, Reforms and Social Dialogue Chris Fearne, together with the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett, paid a visit to the site of the ongoing Bugibba Ferry Landing Site project.

This project, which falls under the scope of the European Fund for Regional Development (2014-2020) with a total investment of €4.2 million, €2.8 million of which are EU funds, is testimony to the strong commitment of the Maltese Government towards improving the accessibility and viability of public maritime transport as an alternative to private car transport.

The Bugibba Ferry Landing Site, an integral part of the SMITHS (Sustainable Multi Intermodal Transport Hubs across Malta) project, is being transformed with modern infrastructure that includes a new breakwater, slipway, pontoon, waiting facilities, gangways, and fenders. This project will not only improve accessibility and reduce road congestion, but will also contribute to the reduction of air emissions. In addition, the introduction of new facilities, such as a multi-purpose hall and a roof garden, are significantly increasing the quality of life of the project’s beneficiaries.

In his comments during the visit, Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne emphasized the importance of environmentally friendly projects and their positive impact on air quality and public health. “The environment and measures in favor of the environment are a priority both for the Maltese Government and for the European Union. So, projects that help protect the environment and protect air quality are projects that qualify for European funds,” repeated the Deputy Prime Minister.

Minister Chris Bonett explained how investment in maritime infrastructure such as breakwaters and piers is imperative for sea transport in our country, both for the connectivity of Maltese citizens and for the influx of tourists who frequent this area. area.

“These structures play a crucial role for us to start facilitating the use of public transport on the sea as it already exists between Cottonera and Sliema towards Valletta. In addition, such investments support the livelihood of coastal communities, provide safe infrastructure for fishermen and ensure sustainable development and resilience to environmental challenges,” concluded Minister Bonett.

As part of the SMITHS project, which also includes the promotion of walking and cycling, as well as the improvement of the public transport system with a number of innovative initiatives, this project is a testament to the work continuous to have a cleaner and more sustainable country.
