Doing it Together: Investing in enforcement for maintaining cleanliness in localities

INWETTQU FLIMKIEN: Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli launches installation of security cameras in Valletta in areas prone to illegal waste disposal Valletta local council

About 50 public areas in the locations of the Port Region that were prone to illegal waste disposal , have now been equipped with security cameras. This was announced during a news conference by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli together with the President of the Port Regional Council Paul Farrugia.

The security camera systems were funded by the Port Regional Council, in order to assist the local councils within the Region in maintaining the cleanliness of these 11 localities. The security systems are all connected to the monitoring systems of the LESA Agency in order to further strengthen the monitoring and enforcement on illegal waste disposal.

In her speech, the Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli praised the initiative and commitment of the Port Regional Council which prepared a sustainable plan to address the challenge of the Port locations in a way that complements other means of ‘ enforcement. She listed that this investment in more enforcement was important, after in 2023 the regional councils began to manage the collection of domestic waste on a regional basis and according to the national waste collection schedule.

“The enforcement of the laws against the illegal disposal of waste is essential for the protection of the environment in which we live, public health and the quality of life of the entire community,” stressed the parliamentary secretary.

The four areas where the cameras have been installed in Valletta include the Kamrata area, Triq il-Merkanti on the corner with Triq it-Trumuntana, Triq San Nikola on the corner with Triq San Pawl and Triq il-Fran on the corner with ‘ St. Dominic Street.

The Mayor of Valletta Alfred Zammit said that the installation of more security systems for monitoring and enforcement on illegal waste disposal will translate into a cleaner and more beautiful City, both for residents and those all who visit the Capital City.

The President of the Port Regional Council Paul Farrugia said that the Port Region is committed to continue working and assisting the local councils within it in order to address challenges that could be a deterrent to the quality of life of the resident. “One of our primary objectives is to give a better quality of life, both to the residents and to everyone who visits the localities within the Region,” stressed Mr. Farrugia.
