Tough test for Malta Women against strong Portugal in European Qualifiers

Ahead of the second European Qualifiers encounter, this time against a very strong Portugal, Head Coach Manuela Tesse spoke about the prestigious draw the Malta Women National Team players earned in last Friday’s away game in Belfast against Northern Ireland.

Tesse was particularly delighted with the resilience shown by the team over the 90 minutes and given confronting a physically strong side.

Focus switched on Tuesday’s game as Tesse made it clear that she intends to start this daunting task against Portugal with the same system of play used against Northern Ireland, and whilst she is fully aware of Portugal’s strength both physically and technically, she perceives playing against a strong team as an opportunity of growth for all the team.

For Tesse, playing against Portugal is a privilege, having followed the achievements of the opponents over the years.

WNT experienced player Rachel Cuschieri hopes to bring her experience of playing against top teams throughout her career into tomorrow’s game.

Holding on to the same game plan exhibited during the Northern Ireland game, Cuschieri stated that the team is very well-focused, not only to defend with the same resilience shown on Friday but also looking to navigate in a way that makes it harder for Portugal to implement their direct football style of game.

Coach Manuela Tesse was forced to make a couple of changes to the group of players initially called up, due to some players receiving knocks during the 90 minutes in Belfast on Friday.

Mainly WNT team captain Emma Lipman will most likely miss this Portugal game, whilst Alisha Sultana’s availability to play is still being assessed.

This UEFA Women’s European Qualifier against Portugal will be played  at the Centenary Stadium, and kicks off at 18:30. Tickets are available at tickets.mfa.com.mt.
