The AWAS building in Marsa will no longer serve as an accommodation center for immigrants

In the last days, another measure of the Government’s electoral program was carried out as the building of the former Dun Ġwann Mamo school in Marsa will no longer be used as a center in which immigrants are accommodated. In the last months, work also started on this building so that it can be used for administrative purposes and become part of the regeneration plans in the area.

The Ministry for the Interior, Security and Work intends that the sports facilities and other spaces on the same site will be used by the Marsa community and will be administered by the Marsa Local Council. This will happen after in the last months the Local Council was given access to this place and started to organize activities in it.

“The Marsa community has borne a disproportionate burden over the years and this Government is committed to changing the situation. We closed this center without putting burdens on other villages in the country. It took us a number of years for this to happen but we wanted to be sure that we do this without affecting the services offered by AWAS,” said Minister Byron Camilleri when he was visiting this place.

He recalled a number of decisions taken by the Government in order to be able to address the phenomenon of irregular immigration and the result obtained in 2023 where more irregular immigrants left our country than arrived.

While the Maltese authorities are always prepared for any eventuality, the decisions taken are making a difference in our communities with evidence. Minister Camilleri made reference to the reduction in arrivals, the work done to make the asylum process more efficient and the emphasis being placed on the return of irregular immigrants.

During the visit Minister Byron Camilleri was accompanied by the CEO of AWAS Clayton Xuereb. Minister Camilleri thanked the leadership and all the workers of AWAS, while praising their commitment and work to assist people with various challenges in every circumstance.
