Malta Ġusta: Minister for Social Policy and Children's Rights Michael Falzon addresses a press conference about payments related to past injustices

Around 4,800 people will benefit from a little more than €8.2 million, as part of payments due to them due to injustices they suffered in the past. The beneficiaries are former members of the bodies established before 1979 and others who later joined the public service, persons who were also in the bodies but later worked in the public sector, and former employees of the Gas Board who were transferred to the Enemalta corporation. For the first time, this year will benefit workers who had joined the Telemalta Corporation between January 1978 and January 1979, but failed to qualify for the service pension.

These details were announced by the Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon during a news conference on Wednesday morning. “This promise is being kept for the seventh consecutive year. At the end of this week, payments will be made again to those people who suffered injustices or anomalies in their employment before March 2013. In total, more than €42.7 million will have been paid,” stated Minister Michael Falzon. Meanwhile, with the closure of the public service scheme, a total of four schemes started in 2017 were closed which include those for members of the police force, for former Malta Electricity Board workers and those on the shore.

Minister Michael Falzon concluded by saying that through the implementation of this measure, all the measures entrusted to the Ministry of Social Affairs for this year were implemented, another testimony of how much this Government fulfills everything it promises.
