81% of Budget measures undertaken

The percentage of Budget measures completed in 2023 is 81%. This was announced by the Head of the Public Service Tony Sultana as he unveiled the latest publication of “It-Twettiq tal-Baġit” series. The rate of implementation continued to improve from year to year in another clear test of how much the Public Administration is working to make the Government’s vision a reality.

Principal Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana explained how this monitoring exercise shows that, in total, 311 measures have been carried out this year. This includes measures from the 2023 budget as well as other measures that were in implementation in their year and were carried out this year.

Amongst a number of examples, Mr Sultana mentioned the renovation and opening of sports facilities, including a new Olympic swimming pool in Cospicua as well as the organisation in Malta of the Games for the Small European Countries. Investments in disciplined bodies, infrastructure, education and the elderly, as well as refurbishment of Health Centres and investment in more free medicines, including assistance towards couples who wish to have their first child.

Principal Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana said that the work carried out by the Public Service is not by chance but comes as a result of strong coordination between directorates and departments, entities and ministries. He therefore thanked all the employees of the wider Public Administration.

Minister for Finance and Employment Clyde Caruana stated, “The forthcoming Budget will be the envy of many other countries, some of which are much larger than us.” He explained that despite the significant €350 million in energy and fuel-related assistance, the Government has implemented a substantial percentage of this year’s budget. This is a testament to the hard work and foresight that the Government is leading with and will continue to lead this country.

Minister Caruana also noted that in a short span of four years, the global landscape has faced significant challenges with far-reaching implications, including the pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the rise in inflation, and the potential emergence of another conflict in the Middle East. Nevertheless, he affirmed that the country’s economy will remain resilient and robust. “In the next Budget, we will continue to expand on our plan and send a clear, strong, and reassuring message in the best interest of Maltese and Gozitan families.”

The publication “It-Twettiq tal-Baġit 2023” contains a list of all measures announced in the 2023 budget, and on each measure, there is a report on its status. In addition, the publication provides an analysis of the economic performance as well as an article outlining social elements in the budgets of recent years.
