MoU was signed in favor of more opportunities for legal professionals with the aim of further improving the legal aid service

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Legal Aid Agency and the Bar Association which will strengthen the collaboration between the two entities in the justice sector. This is an agreement that will lead to legal professionals, who are already involved in the system and new ones who may enter in the coming time, continue to be fostered in more opportunities.

The Minister for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector Jonathan Attard described this agreement as an important development that complements the political work of the government. “In recent years, the Government with its work has prioritized the commitment to have an inclusive society that gives access to justice for everyone and that establishes effective, accountable, inclusive institutions that enjoy the trust of the people”, claimed Minister Attard.

Minister Attard recalled how in the last 10 years there was an unprecedented investment even in the human resource where from 16 lawyers and legal procurators today there are 60 lawyers and legal procurators with the Agency.

“I also enjoy noting the aspect of collaboration with the Junior Chamber of Advocates, in such a way that you have law students who every year are given an opportunity to gain experience in this Agency,” continued Minister Attard.

He concluded by saying that this agreement will lead to continuing to raise the level of the service provided because it would be useless to strengthen the laws, to strengthen the institutions and there are those in society who are deprived of justice due to social reasons and financial.

Director of the Legal Aid Agency Bruno Zahra said that the Agency will continue to strengthen the legal aid service where among others there will be students who will be assigned to lawyers of the agency to increase in practice. “Furthermore, with this collaboration, the training carried out by the Bar Association will also be accessible to legal aid lawyers and thus they will have a professional training development over the years”, concluded Mr. Zahra.

The agreement was signed by the Director of the Legal Aid Agency Bruno Zahra and the President of the Bar Association Dr Peter Fenech. Present for the signing of this agreement was also the Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector Johan Galea.
