BOV Super Cup to be played in Gozo on 8th December

The BOV Super Cup will be played on Thursday December 8th at the Gozo Stadium (kick-off 4pm).

This is the first time ever since the first edition in 1984, that the Super Cup is not being played in Malta and will move to our sister island.  It will see last season’s BOV Premier League champions Hibernians and Izibet FA Trophy winners Floriana compete for the Cup.  Will it be Hibernians’ fourth or Floriana’s third Super Cup in their history?

The first ever ‘BOV Super Cup – Gozo Edition’ was officially launched today in the presence of Jake Grech and Jan Busuttil representing Hibernians FC and Floriana FC respectively.

“It is an honour for us that competitions like this are played in Gozo and we look forward to more events like this which above all strengthen internal tourism,” said Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri.  “The Government is committed to continue to improve the sports facilities, to attract more sport tourism to the island of Gozo.”

The Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima spoke about the popularity of football in the local scene and said that this year’s edition of the BOV Super Cup is a highly anticipated one.  “After a two-year absence due to the restrictive measures linked to the pandemic, this edition that will take place in Gozo for the first time is much-awaited,” said Minister Grima. “Like any sporting event, I am convinced that there will be not only enthusiasm, but also a game with a sporting spirit. This year’s edition that will be held in Gozo is also in line with our work to see that sport is accessible to everyone”, said Minister Grima.

MFA Vice President Matthew Paris thanked all stakeholders who are behind this innovative initiative.  “The BOV Super Cup represents top Maltese football and the Association is taking it to Gozo to also give the Gozitans the opportunity to experience first hand one of the top competitions in Maltese football” said Dr Paris.  He explained that the Association believes that this will be a good game that the Gozitans and those who will be in Gozo during that festive period should not miss.  He also announced that the game will be accompanied by a fan village at It-Tokk in Rabat, details of which will be announced in due course.

“As a major supporter of sporting initiatives in Malta, Bank of Valletta is delighted to see the MFA reach out to new audiences and continue to promote football across our islands” said BOV COO Ernest Agius. “Our extensive support to various sporting initiatives stems from our belief that sports is beneficial towards the physical and mental well-being of our community, in line with our ESG commitments”.

Dr Samuel Azzopardi, President of the Gozo Football Association, said a number of big events are planned to be held at the Gozo Stadium, one of which is the BOV Super Cup in December.  However prior to that the Stadium will host two games of the UEFA Under 19 preparatory tournament, and later on in July host the actual tournament that includes the top Under 19 teams in Europe.
